Changing anesthesia providers is a big deal and not all anesthesia provider groups have the experience and resources to offer you a smooth transition to the new service. Here are some things to contemplate when considering a new partner.
What determines whether or not the change will go smoothly? Whether or not a change in contract providers goes smoothly or becomes disruptive depends upon the competencies, capabilities, resources, and track record of the new provider group.
How many of your providers do you want to stay? Typically, in a provider group transition, a majority of the existing providers will choose to stay on. For this to be done successfully, the new anesthesia provider must put the appropriate recruiting and HR personnel in place to nurture and coach the providers through the transition process. When this is done effectively, we have seen that around 90 percent of providers will typically sign on with the new group. This reduces the hospital risk factor substantially.
Does the new group have a track record of successful transitions? Provider groups that are operationally focused and are routinely involved in transitions will have the expertise and processes down to a science. In most cases, these transitions will go smoothly. Within six to eight weeks, if managed properly, the key OR stakeholders (surgeons, patients, perioperative staff) should be happy with their new service.
